Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

23 Nov

Game on! Scott Pilgrim just met the girl of his dreams…literally. But in order for them to date, he must defeat her seven evil exes- a rogues’ gallery, including an infamous skateboarder, a vegan rock star and fearsome identical twins! From the genre-smashing director of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead comes a “true original” powered up by wit, action and groundbreaking visuals that you will want to watch again as soon as it’s over! (DVD)

I loved this movie. The tagline says it all: “An epic of epic epicness” so true. From the moment it was being advertised, I loved the whole video game concept of it. That expectation was fully fulfilled in this movie. Michael Cera played his usual “dorky-guy-who-somehow-gets-the-girl-who-is-just-not-like-the-other-girls” type thing. But it totally worked for this movie. It was endearing. Kieran Culkin is absolutely hilarious as Scott’s roommate. He has legitimately some of the best lines in this movie. This is truly an ensemble movie though. The fact that Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, and Jason Schwartzmann make up three of the evil exes is already a win. (The first two are the skateboarder and the vegan mentioned earlier btw) It’s just ridiculous and full of witty, sarcastic humor that it simply a lot of fun to watch. The battle sequences are a lot of fun too. From a Bollywood musical number style face off, bass guitar battle, an actual battle of the bands, and just good old fashioned beating the crap out of the other person. Although, I will say, after watching it, I feel like only a certain age demograpic would really appreciate this movie late teens, twenties, maybe late twenties early 30s. With all of the old school gaming references, the pixelated images, the KO’s, the coins dropping whenever an enemy is defeated. Basically, the generation that grew up with the gaming systems will love this movie. Like, I look at my parents, and they might laugh at some of it, but they won’t get all of it. I look at my little sister, and everything she’s ever played has been on a PS2 or 3, an XBOX, or a WII, she won’t get all of the old Nintendo humor. So yeah, that’s my rant about that. Lastly, hats off to Beck, who did the music for this movie, it’s great. Even during the title menu, I turned to my friend and told her that I already was a fan of the music. 🙂

9/10 I would definitely watch this again
