Nelson Mandela, in his first term as the South African President, initiates a unique venture to unite the apartheid-torn land: enlist the national rugby team on a mission to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup (IMDb)
Fun fact. I’m a sucker for true story inspirational sports movies. This one didn’t disappoint. Plus, with Clint Eastwood at the helm, it was a step above normal sports movies. The storyline itself is fascinating. Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela is spot on, it’s actually kind of scary how spot on he was. Plus, the movie gave a great insight into Mandela’s background, just in case people didn’t know. Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar, the team captain, also did a great job. He also inhabited the character well. One of the few setbacks is that it is a little slow in some parts, and also, rugby isn’t explained very well. They throw in a few basic rules here and there, but during the final game, it gets confusing. But, this movie is worth a watch for the inspirational story. Even if you don’t like those types of movies, give this one a shot.
