In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined. So I wasn’t expecting much from this movie, but I was actually pretty impressed by it. It brought to mind the summer blockbusters in the E.T. and Goonies vein, but used the technology of today to still tell a pretty scary alien story as well. It also had a nice balance of growing up/family storyline and the CGI alien that eats people. Joel Courtney (Joe) stood out in his breakout role, and Elle Fanning (Alice) proved that she’s not the only one in that family who can act. The two of them together also had natural chemistry that worked really well. I also really liked Kyle Chandler as the dad. The three of them basically had the coming of age thing down. Then there was the big scary alien that killed about 20 people by the end of the movie. I hate things jumping out at me in a movie, and this movie reminded me of that. Basically, I love it when a movie exceeds my expectations, and this one did.
