So, I read this book back in high school for summer reading, and I remember thinking: better than a normal summer reading book, but nothing amazing. And the thing is, that’s pretty much how I feel about this adaptation. Not horrible, but it could have been a lot better. Visually, it’s beautiful, especially with the after life parts, but that’s no surprise considering Peter Jackson directed. Also, the idea of Susie being stuck in between was shown really well. The acting was good, with Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz as the parents, Saoirse Ronan as Susie and Stanley Tucci as her killer. Of the group, Tucci stands out. He was terrifying, and with the way he altered his looks and voice, sometimes I forgot it was him. The real problem with this movie is the storyline. It is all over the place. One moment, it is a crime drama with borderline disturbing violence, then the very next scene, it’s really sentimental and sweet with her family. (This was also a problem with the book, so not entirely Jackson’s fault here) Also, the timeline was so confusing, at one point I literally had to pause the movie so I could figure out what year it was in the movie. Lastly, I feel like you had to read the book to fully get it. I know I personally was filling in gaps from what I remembered from the book. In the end, if you want to watch a Peter Jackson movie, stick to LOTR.
