A substance, designed to help the brain repair itself, gives rise to a super-intelligent chimp who leads an ape uprising. (IMDb)
To preface this, I have never seen a movie from this franchise, ever. It just never interested me. I decided to watch this one because I heard you didn’t need any prior knowledge of the series and that it was really good as a stand alone movie. And, I heard right. This plot is interesting and quickly paced, and definitely keeps your attention. What really makes this movie though, is the CGI/motion capture animation of the different apes. It was absolutely amazing and mesmerizing to watch. Who knew a really compelling acting performance could be given by a motion capture chimpanzee who doesn’t really speak? Can definitely thank Andy Serkis for that, who is absolutely fantastic as Caesar. The rest of the actors, the ones playing humans, also turn in really great performances, but it is the actors playing the apes that steal the show. With a good story that stands apart from the rest of the franchise and massively impressive special effects, this is actually totally worth a watch.
