One Day

one dayAfter spending the night together on the night of their college graduation Dexter and Em are shown each year on the same date to see where they are in their lives. They are sometimes together, sometimes not, on that day. (IMDb)

I’ve wanted to see this one for awhile, mostly because of the wide range of reactions and reviews that it has gotten from my my family and friends. I have heard everything from this movie is complete garbage to this movie is beautiful and made me sob for ten minutes. So, I wanted to decide for myself…Basically, I’ve concluded that I am somewhere in the middle. The concept itself is brilliant. Going into it, I thought it was a “same time, next year” thing, where they met up on that date specifically. Instead, they live their lives normally, and we as the audience only see that specific day. So, the whole slice of life thing was really cool. I mean, I had to suspend disbelief a bit that a few extremely key points all happened to happen on the exact same day, just different years, but I went with it. On the other hand, the concept wasn’t fully executed in my opinion. It was so interesting to see these bits of their lives, but, the script always had to take time to fill us in on details, then pair that with the extreme ups and downs of their relationship, that when they finally got together (not a spoiler, it’s obvious), I wasn’t as invested or as satisfied as I could have been. Now, I did love Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess together. They had great chemistry together and I loved how their friendship was clearly evident. Yeah, Hathaway’s accent was not solid, but I ended up forgiving her for that. Now, at the end, I did cry. Like a baby. It was completely heart breaking, yet appropriate, and I was a mess. Through my tears, however, I was like “huh. These last two minutes are really inconsistent with the entire rest of the movie…” So, I’ll chalk up my feely-feelings to the acting haha. Overall though, it’s a decent romance movie that still manages to make you feel something, even through its faults and inconsistencies.

5.5/10
