Footloose

08 May

footlooseCity teenager Ren MacCormack moves to a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the populace. (IMDb)

So. There are some remakes that are just highly unnecessary. This was one of them. I know when this was first being announced, it was going to be a movie version of the stage musical, basically it would be pulling a Hairspray. (Movie, Musical based off Movie, New Movie based off Musical) And honestly, that’s what they should have done. This was pretty much a carbon copy of the original. The script wasn’t even that good. They keep saying that Ren is a city smart ass with an attitude, yet he he never actually has an attitude. All of hils “smart aleck” lines are dumb one liners that aren’t even that biting.  Like Ren’s first five minutes on screen are him being super nice and sweet to his aunt and cousins, his uncle saying he heard about his attitude, Ren saying one line about it, then his uncle going “there’s that attitude I heard so much about”. And it goes on like this for the entire movie. There were a few things that I did like. Although unnecessary, the update/modernization to the story worked, it totally made sense. Also, the dancing was really good with great choreography. There was a wide range of dance styles (and like half of the dancers were So You Think You Can Dane people, so that didn’t hurt either), and Kenny Wormald as Ren is a really good dancer. And, I actually liked Julianne Hough as Ariel, she did some decent acting with a thinly written character, same goes for Andie MacDowell as Ariel’s mom. Overall though, just go watch the original, it’s better.
