British retirees travel to India to take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored hotel. Less luxurious than its advertisements, the Marigold Hotel nevertheless slowly begins to charm in unexpected ways. (IMDb)
In a word, this is adorable. The all-star cast doesn’t hurt though. Judi Dench leads the group as a woman trying to move on after her husband’s death. She was lovely. But whenever does Judi Dench not deliver? Tom Wilkinson’s storyline is the most interesting, Bill Nighy is great, and then of course there’s Maggie Smith. She was on it. Which, again, when is she not? I also enjoyed Dev Patel as the hotel manager. He is a bright, optimistic character, and it’s really interesting watching his character develop. The script is nothing groundbreaking, but it works in the hands of this overly capable cast. I thought the way it was filmed was really nice. It captured not only India’s chaotic, crowded, energy, but it’s beauty as well. Definitely worth a watch.
