The Sapphires

I’ll just admit it, I’m a sucker for people who sing really well. Which is why I started even watching musicals. This isn’t a musical, more of a movie with music, but man can these ladies sing. Especially Jessica Mauboy (Julie). Wow. Chris O’Dowd actually doesn’t have a bad set of pipes either. But honestly, he’s kind of the reason to keep watching this, besides the wonderful singing. The story is really cool and inspiring, but it gets a tad over-sentimental, the writing and acting comes off amateur-ish in moments. I’ll admit, it also doesn’t help that I watched two really good movies that same day (Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Trainwreck). Maybe my expectations were too high. But, in the end, this music biopic is just ok.
