I’ve been looking forward to seeing this. Amy Schumer is really funny, and I liked this her writing/Judd Apatow directing combination. It worked out really well. The thing that really sold it for me though is that I knew this was going to be funny. That part was obvious. What I didn’t expect (and was pleasantly surprised by) were the more emotionally poignant moments. They were there, you felt them, and then you were laughing a moment later. The fact that we as an audience completely go along with it is proof of how strong this script really is. I really hope to see more writing from her in the future. The same goes for her acting. Honestly, really well done. I know I’m talking about Schumer a lot, and she is one of the main reasons that this movie works, but the rest of the cast is nothing to scoff at either. This is one of Bill Hader’s more emotionally vulnerable roles that I’ve seen him do, and he does a really nice job. Brie Larson, Mike Birbiglia, and Colin Quinn are great as her family, they bring some of the more grounded moments to the movie. Then on the other side of the spectrum, you have Ezra Miller, Vanessa Bayer, Randall Park, and Jon Glaser as her really funny co-workers, and an unrecognizably hilarious Tilda Swinton as her boss. Also who knew that LeBron James and John Cena could act? And be funny? Super pleasantly surprised by that. I could literally keep talking about this. My only complaint is that it get a tad laggy in the middle and we all know how it’s going to end. But honestly, who cares, because the ride getting there is a ton of fun.
