The Night Before

MV5BMTkyNDY1ODQwNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzA2MjUwNzE@._V1_SX214_AL_On Christmas eve, three lifelong friends, two of whom are Jewish, spend the night in New York City looking for the Holy Grail of Christmas parties. (IMDb)

To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t expecting a whole lot from this, just a run of the mill Christmas comedy. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I was consistently laughing almost the entire movie. This is mostly thanks to Seth Rogen, who completely steals the movie. His drug induced Christmas Eve is one that me and my family were quoting for the rest of the night. He had some of the best moments. What I really appreciated about this was that it actually tried to balance the typical raunchy humor with some real moments, and for the most part, they worked. Joseph Gordon-Levitt deserves some credit for basically being the one that had to carry the dramatic moments, and then switch immediately back. Throw in Anthony Mackie, and the three main friends have great chemistry together. Throw in Lizzy Caplan, Mindy Kaling, and Jillian Bell in the mix along with a pot dealing Michael Shannon and this movie provides consistent laughs. It won’t be a Christmas classic, but it’s a really funny diversion from the normal Christmas movie.

So, the reason I was really interested in this was the cast. I really like James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson, and Vincent Cassel separately, but I didn’t see in my brain how the three of them would all fit in the same movie. And in a way, I was right, but I also think that was maybe the point? I’m completely guessing, but the three of them never fit together perfectly, which worked for the characters, in my opinion. The movie itself staggers along as blindly as its main character, but in a way, that also worked. But, what I can say with complete confidence is that the stylization of this is really cool. It looks great. The plot is also really interesting. There was just one too many twists and turns for me. So, overall, director Danny Boyle had me kind of scratching my head. Which is maybe what he intended? So, maybe I’m actually complimenting him and calling him a genius.
