Captain America: Civil War

MV5BMjQ0MTgyNjAxMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjUzMDkyODE@._V1_SX214_AL_Political interference in the Avengers’ activities causes a rift between former allies Captain America and Iron Man. (IMDb)

I’m not going to lie, I’ve been looking forward to this one since the first teaser trailer. And I think it lived up to the hype. I would of loved it if it surpassed the hype, but I was thoroughly entertained the entire time. I found myself going back and forth as to whose side I agreed with more (as did some of the characters). It was interesting to watch though. The dynamic between every character was really clear, and it was interesting that although they fought each other, they still maintained those relationships. While seeing that they all were still friends and respected each other was great, it also meant that the stakes were not as high. Everyone was just running around trying to punch each other, at worst knock somebody out. So that big fight, while still really cool, I didn’t sense that any of them was really in danger. We did get a knock down drag out fight in the end, and that made sense with what was going on. I know I’m being a bit nitpicky, because I did really enjoy this overall. It was really cool to see that many people on one screen, and all of those actors just work so well off one another. The special effects are awesome, per usual. And two new characters (Black Panther and Spider Man) were introduced really well. While I wish it had been a tad more epic and surprising, I still really enjoyed it.

Ant-Man

MV5BMjM2NTQ5Mzc2M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTcxMDI2NTE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_-1Armed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, cat burglar Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. (IMDb)

This was the last of the movies that I needed to catch up on before watching Civil War. And I thought it was fine. I didn’t love it, I didn’t hate it. It was just fine. Paul Rudd is a great choice for Scott Lang. It was well cast overall. Michael Peña is a standout, but then again, when is he not? I’m not a fan of bugs in general, so I was a little worried about the whole ants everywhere thing, but it only skeeved me out once or twice. The special effects are really cool, and the fights are really well choreographed, with the way he incorporates shrinking and enlarging into his fighting style. Overall, this is a middling entry into the MCU.

Thor: The Dark World

MV5BMTQyNzAwOTUxOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTE0OTc5OQ@@._V1_UY268_CR3,0,182,268_AL_When Dr. Jane Foster gets cursed with a powerful entity known as the Aether, Thor is heralded of the cosmic event known as the Convergence and the genocidal Dark Elves. (IMDb)

The first Thor was my favorite of all of the set up movies to the first Avengers, so I was excited to finally see this one. And overall, I enjoyed it. I think this plot line actually kept me more on my toes than the last one. Especially with Loki, played brilliantly once again by Tom Hiddleston. Loki is all over the place and extremely unpredictable after the first Avengers, and it was really fun to watch. I always love Chris Hemsworth as Thor, especially whenever he is on Earth. I also loved seeing Kat Dennings and Stellan Skarsgard return to their roles. Both of them are so funny. What was disappointing was Natalie Portmans’ storyline. She was so busy being the damsel in distress that I literally forgot until the end that she is actually a brilliant scientist. But overall, I enjoyed this and can’t wait to go back to Asgard in Thor 3.

Iron Man 3

MV5BMTkzMjEzMjY1M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTMxOTYyOQ@@._V1_UY268_CR3,0,182,268_AL_When Tony Stark’s world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution. (IMDb)

This is one of the few Marvel movies that I haven’t seen yet, and I wanted to formally catching up before (finally) watching Civil War, so I thought this was a good place to start. And, I think this may be the best Iron Man of the trilogy so far. Tony Stark was really humanized in this one, thanks to another great performance from Robert Downey Jr. It was also really nice to see Pepper finally get to be more than the damsel in distress, multiple times. I don’t want to give away too much, but the twists and turns were really quite interesting, especially with Ben Kingsley’s character. Guy Pearce makes a formidable villain, Don Cheadle is always a great Rhodes, I really have no complaints in regards to the cast. The special effects are on point, as always, especially in the big climactic battle. While it does drag in parts, this doesn’t overall detract from what is a really solid movie.

X-Men: Apocalypse

MV5BMjU1ODM1MzYxN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTA4NDE2ODE@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_AL_With the emergence of the world’s first mutant, Apocalypse, the X-Men must unite to defeat his extinction level plan. (IMDb)

I’ve always been a fan of the X-Men franchise, and I loved the reset of the timeline in Days of Future Past. I was excited to see how everything could change. And of course, younger versions of some of my favorite characters is always a plus. I was disappointed to see that it was getting panned by critics, but after seeing it, I don’t really understand where. Is it the best X-Men movie? No. Is it the worst? Still no. In my opinion, it was a set up movie for a new era of the X-Men franchise. We got to see all of these young characters start out, so now it will be interesting to see them grow and change, and come into their own. The acting was great across the board, but this is such an all-star cast, I really didn’t expect anything less. The special effects are amazing. The level of destruction that you see throughout is insane. I don’t even understand how a they even envisioned that. The fights are all super cool, but I’ve also never been disappointed by that. I will say, I wish they would have taken a little more of a risk overall story wise. It proceeded the way I expected it to. It would have been cool to see a twist of some sort that would have taken all of us by surprise. But at the end of the day, I really enjoyed this, and I would love to see this new generation of X-Men movies really take off.
