I’ve been meaning to see this one for awhile, because I love Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and I love them even more when they are together. Throw in a cast of basically their friends, and we have a movie. Unfortunately, this doesn’t quite live up to its potential. The Fey/Poehler magic is definitely there. But the script tries to put the characters in boxes. Fey’s character is the “bad one” and Poehler’s is “the good one”. While the two of them are very funny, there wasn’t a whole lot of room for complexity. (Fey gives it a valiant effort with the daughter subplot, but it just couldn’t be taken seriously with all of the ridiculousness happening.) Basically, this two hour movie could have been cut by about 30 minutes. It was like there was one joke too many. Bobby Moynihan had one too many drug jokes, Maya Rudolph had one too many stuck up suburban lady jokes, Kate McKinnon had one too many lesbian jokes, etc. The list goes on because there were some brilliant comedians in this movie, and they all had funny moments, but in the end, it was just too much. So, when it tries to be sentimental in the end, it doesn’t fully hit. So, basically what I’m trying to say was that this could have been brilliant, but instead, it was just ok.

Couldn’t agree more. Such a talented group of comedians who make do the best they can. I wish Tina and Amy could find a film that showcased their talents as well as their respective TV shows did. Sisters ain’t it.
