Me Before You

mv5bmtq2nje4nde2nv5bml5banbnxkftztgwotcwnde5nze-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_A girl in a small town forms an unlikely bond with a recently-paralyzed man she’s taking care of. (IMDb)

So I saw the trailer for this a while back and thought it was a bit treacly. But I wanted to give it a shot because I really like the two leads, Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin. I wasn’t disappointed there. The two both played their parts well and had a very easy chemistry. There’s even pockets of some good stuff happening here; Matthew Lewis as her triathlon obsessed boyfriend, Janet McTeer and Charles Dance as his parents. But overall, I found this movie a little shallow, on all fronts. As a love story, it’s formulaic, and develops too late to really care about them as a couple. As a movie about disabled people, it was the literal opposite of formulaic (Spoilers are coming), considering his life does not magically turn around because she’s entered it. As for an argument for assisted suicide, it’s very shallow. Again, it comes in late and a little out of nowhere, and there’s only one very frank conversation about it. This movie could have been a lot more, but I overall I found it lacking.

4/10
